Having an ATTITUDE of GRATITUDE

Don't Put All Your Eggs in One Basket
22{30}

Putting your eggs all in one basket is like not taking opportunities when they present themselves. If they are all in one basket they seem safe and sound…so to speak. Not really…Spread things around a bit, take a risk, go through that open door, take a chance and explore other areas and interests. Opportunities arise right before our very eyes; we just have to be able to see them for what they are. At one point in my own life I tried to keep “my eggs” in one basket….it seemed the easiest thing to me…it felt safe…I was comfortable. But I could not control everything that was going on around me. Things changed, things were turned upside down and around. It was out of my control. My eggs were spilled out in many directions. Little did I know at the time; it was for the best. New opportunities were opened up to me; all I had to do was take that first step through that open door.
When opportunity knocks…open up and let it in;
but just make sure your eggs don’t get broken!
I’m thankful for the opportunities that I have come across in my life…some bad, some ok; some were great and still are…
Either way my basket is still full even though
I have spread out my eggs.

Our message this morning at church was presented
by our children’s choir singing a musical called
“Attitude of Gratitude”.
They sang of having Thanksgiving everyday instead of once a year. They reminded us that every good and perfect gift is from God
and that we truly do have so much…..
so in return we should have an attitude of gratitude.

"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of
God in Christ Jesus concerning you."
 ~1 Thessalonians 5:18 KJV

I love having this “Attitude of Gratitude” this month.
Yes it has been rather challenging and hard to do some days,
but it has been worth it to me.

"Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again.
That's the way life is." ~Bob Feller

Sharing My Gratitudes

Sharing
21{30}

"The miracle is this: the more we share the more we have."
 ~ Leonard Nimoy
Let’s think a minute about sharing. Growing up we were taught to share. Sharing is a good thing. Each time we donate our time, money, knowledge, and gifts we are sharing.
We share recipes, and craft projects, love, and
kindness through our thoughts, words and prayers.
Jackie shared his lunch this week. I shared some photo how-to’s and where-to’s with a couple of friends. Operation Christmas Child is a sharing program of shoe boxes of gifts for hurting children across the world. A simple act of kindness is sharing! We share with the less fortunate from the abundance we have been blessed with. Thanksgiving this year will be shared with family and friends and with people we don’t even know through
our donations of food and T-shirts for Turkeys programs.

What we receive from our sharing is sheer joy, satisfaction, and love. It gives us a warm fuzzy….it spreads smiles for miles…To know that you helped someone through sharing is a great gift to ourselves and is what we are expected to do for others.
So in this month of being thankful we should also be sharing through giving.
Thanks + Giving!
I am thankful for sharing, caring people.

This photo is an old one of my niece Cassidy; sharing her boiled p-nuts with our dog Rocky…he eats the hulls and all. You can see the delight in her happy face as she ate some and he ate some!

20/30 days of Gratitude and I'm a Winner!

Before I Had A Dryer......
20{30}
I am grateful for electricity. I know, I know….everyone is grateful for this. It’s a common everyday thing. Most of the time we do not even think about it much less what we would do without it! But….its a special thing at my house….you see my husband Jackie works for the rural electric co-op which provides our electricity. It’s not only our source of comfort, heat, convenience, and necessity…it’s our source of income and has been for 30 years now! From a lineman to a foreman, Jackie has provided our family with everything we have ever needed or wanted. We have been blessed because of his job, the benefits, and the luxury of having electricity…can you even imagine being without it?
I would have to start using these old clothes pins again… :)
So on this 20th day of 30 days of gratitude
I am very thankful for Jackie and my electricity; in more ways than one.

“Electricity is like God. You can't see Him….but you can see the light.”
Necessity for N
Because Electricity is a necessity in our home!

I’m also thankful for Christina @ Soul Aperture….I was a winner in her Pink Love drawing!! YAY! I got a nice little package in the mail *and who doesn’t love a surprise in the mail* and this is what she shared with me….a bit of her pink love or as I say...
a bit of her pink loveliness. A photograph taken by Christina herself.
Isn’t it just beautiful?

She also sent me a little pink ticket for a free WISH!

I wish…I wish…I wish…………
I wish you would please pay her a visit, you will not be disappointed!

Wow…..I just covered another day of gratitude, the letter “N” for my ABC’s series and have sung praises about Christina @ Soul Aperture! Whew……………!

Tickled To Death

Tickled To Death
Its funny how things come together….In doing my "Saying My ABC’s" series of photos…"L" is the letter I have reached and Laughter is the word for "L".  The photo above was chosen for "L" because, by total accident, it has the visible words "tickled to death" in the text.  My blogger friend and pal Char has had a recent post in her ramblins on laughter and what makes us giggle! Char’s blog spot has a short list of funny things
she would like to know about her friends:

1. Your favorite funny movie
2. Your favorite joke
3. Your favorite funny memory as a child
4. Who can always make you laugh?

So….with all this coming together at one fell swoop I decided to re-examine laughter!
have some answers to Char’s questions, my photo/word for the letter "L"
and some good thoughts and facts about this hilarious subject.

1~My favorite Movie is Christmas Vacation  -the long scene where the squirrel get loose in the house is hysterical! Side-splitting, laugh till I can’t breathe…funny!

2~My favorite joke is about child psychology…..
A new teacher thought she would use what she learned in her psychology courses.
She said to her class, "Everyone who thinks they are stupid, please stand up."
After a few seconds, one boy stood. "Do you think you're stupid?" she asked.
"No, ma'am, but I just didn't want you to have to stand there all by yourself."
*snickering*

3~My favorite funny childhood memory:
When I was much, much younger, a mere child, we were at my Grannie and Granddaddy’s house having breakfast and talking while we ate a good old southern meal of grits and eggs. As usual something funny was said by yours truly (can’t remember what it was, irrelevant too). Granddaddy had just taken a big bite of grits and got so tickled that he spewed grits straight out of his mouth across the whole table!
Whatever had been funny was even funnier then!

4~Who makes me laugh? Becky…my bestest. We can laugh about anything, nothing, something, and everything! We understand each other and often have the same thought at the same time! Whenever I need a boost I can give her a call and before you know it we are laughing it up…..

Laughter truly is the best medicine
~Smile. Smiling is the beginning of laughter. Like laughter, it’s contagious. Pioneers in "laugh therapy", find it’s possible to laugh without even experiencing a funny event.
The same holds for smiling.
When you look at someone or see something even mildly pleasing, practice smiling.

~Count your blessings. Literally make a list. The simple act of considering the good things in your life will distance you from negative thoughts that are a barrier to humor and laughter. When in a state of sadness, we have further to travel to get to humor and laughter.
~When you hear laughter, move toward it. Sometimes humor and laughter are private, a shared joke among a small group, but usually not. More often, people are very happy to share something funny because it gives them an opportunity to laugh again and feed off the humor you find in it. When you hear laughter, seek it out and ask, "What’s funny?"

~Spend time with fun, playful people. These are people who laugh easily–both at themselves and at life’s absurdities–and who routinely find the humor in everyday events. Their playful point of view and laughter are contagious.
~Bring humor into conversations. Ask people, "What’s the funniest thing that happened to you today? This week? In your whole life?"

All said and done…Laugh it up!  We need to use more of our sixth sense:
our sense of humor! Humor is the way we should view the world.
"Angels fly because they take themselves lightly."

Thanks Char for this hilarious inspiration!

Dental floss on the Christmas list

All Things Beautiful
As every well minded person should do….shop with a budget and stick to the list. But you all know just how hard that is to do. I myself shop by a list just so I won’t forget what I need. I also shop by saying “Oh that looks good” or “I haven’t had that in a while” and into the buggy it goes. Only to get sticker shocked at the check out…and don’t you just hate those self check register thingies. Some how I always manage, the two times I’ve tried it, to get an item that will NOT scan. And to think that “self-scanning” took a job away from someone. Shame on the store.
My daughter and her hubby, Holly and Richard, shop using a budget and a shopping list too. They really stick to the list. They’re young and just starting out and will have their 2 year anniversary Sept. 22. They are really smart minded when it comes to their money. They found a new grocery store this week……it’s one of those that sells at cost plus 10%. Have you ever seen a couple in their 20’s get excited over a grocery store!? Oh my! Going through the store, Holly is the backbone of sticking to the list. But sometimes at the check-out and even after they get home, she sees items that were not on the list…RICHARD! So yesterday’s trip to the new store proved a little different. Richard would see something he wanted and asked if it was on the list, when Holly tells him no, he puts it back…until they get to the Pop-Tarts…."No honey, it’s not on the list" says Holly…."Well write it in on the list so I can put it in the buggy!" Richard bamboozles her! LOL…..he’s so stinking funny! That’s one way to get what he wants and then all he has to say is "well it was on the list."

Speaking of lists….they use a Christmas list too. They also provide us with a list to shop for them. Things on their Christmas wish list include wants, needs, and practical things.
Wants are the things they would not buy for themselves and pray that we will. The needs are exactly that….things they need. And the practical things are everyday things, like a gift basket of cleaning supplies, or health and beauty aids. They love it!

Holly has a teeth fetish…..Her perfectly beautiful straight white teeth have to be clean, clean, clean…therefore using and requiring lots of dental floss; dental floss in her purse, in her car, in the bathroom and in the kitchen; dental floss everywhere. Consequently…dental floss is on the Christmas list under practical.
As for Richard, his practical is body cologne and deodorant to cure his fetish of being clean and smelling good! The boy spends 30+ minutes in the shower, singing and drumming….. drumming on the shower walls. *Yes he has drums and once upon a time was in a band*….. But anyway he’s clean…spick and span and mighty good smelling too!

These things are all good things, practical and smart things and sometimes funny.

Remember to stick to your list and if it’s not on there…add it!

Happy Flossing

PS…I bought me some Pop-Tarts this morning…strawberry without icing! Yummy

Imagine having no hope or faith…

Imagine...
I’ve just returned from a sunless morning in the garden; alone with my thoughts and ideas while picking the fruits of my labors. A fine mist of rain sprinkling down on me giving me comfort in my wandering mind.
Thoughts of children…

Children who just want to be loved and needed; who want a good home, to be fed, and taught. Custody battles are drawn, lines have been crossed, and the war between parents has begun. But you being to wonder…who really wants what is best for this small child?  One parent’s reason is the other’s quarrel. Where does the little one stand in all this controversy? It’s only for the judgment of one man to determine.
More thoughts of children…
Mothers who have babies and do not want them; and want-to-be mothers who cannot have babies. I know there is a reason for everything but it sure is hard to understand sometimes.
A young woman’s yearning along with her husband for a child. Complications that are hard to understand are being dealt with emotionally, medically, and financially. All with the question in the back of their minds “How anyone could not want their own child and be willing to destroy it!”  I don’t think God even understands that. He does however understand the desire in ones heart for a child. A heart that is hungry and aching to love and nourish.
He will provide.
…As the mist begins to get heavier and my hair begins to take on a life of its own; I quickly finish my gathering. With a basket full of peas, tomatoes, and okra; I head to the house...still full of questions and wonder in my mind but also with a peace that everything will transpire like it should, and be how its meant to be.......
Through hope, faith, and many prayers; I can’t imagine it any other way.
Saying My ABC’s
Imagine is for “I”
Imagine a life where hope, peace, and love abound, through faith in a higher spirit.

Back Up and Rewind

~ The highest wisdom is loving kindness. ~Talmud
A long day yesterday, of what seemed like a whirl wind at times at the VA clinic with my daddy, finally turned out to be a quiet evening at the grill for some burgers and grilled potatoes. …..Or so it seemed like it was going to be quiet. Stop.…wait….back up to the clinic….Vets are some of the nicest people you can meet, it’s like they are all in one big boat. Everyone is friendly and kind, even the staff at the clinic…they were ALL nice, patience and all smiley every time you talked to them. Not entirely true, we did find one clerk that looked rather grumpy, like maybe he’d sleep wrong or something...shhhhh…it was a man, . There were enough nice ones that they cancel him out! Now, on with the story…No matter the problem the veteran has, he seems to make the most of it; he just wants his fair shake. To my daddy, they said, "OK Mr. M. we are going to fix you right up with your request, based on the eval, for that electric scooter."
He can’t even walk around in Wal-Mart without giving out of breathe, long story short! "
…and we need to get you some hearing aids too." they said.
"What?" says my daddy cupping his ear….
"WE-NEED-TO-GET-YOU-SOME- HEARING-AIDS!"
No run around, nothing. Nice goes a long way!
*Squealing tires* Stop again….back up and rewind…..Back to the quite evening….Ha….We were putting the freshly patted out hamburgers and the cut-n-half potatoes on the grill when we hear car tires squealing on the road and a loud POP! Remember I did mention squealing tires. Our little road is a cul-de-sac…..this was out on the other road…the road which has the BIG bad downhill curve or up-hill depending if you are coming or going! And you know me….I had to go see, go help was more like it. After all, I have worked in a dentist office before so I was qualified, right? So off I go, leaving hubby with the burgers….Jump in car, go down drive way, turn left, stop at end of our road and see the wreck. OK…now here’s something disturbing….Several cars had went by with only one man on a motorcycle stopping to help the poor little fellow. So here I go. First I tell the man to let’s get the giant garbage can out of the road before someone else comes around and down the curve and has another wreck on top of this one. Why he had not already done this, was beyond me! Must be a man thing. The young fellow appeared to be fine and was calling 911 himself. Another disturbing thing….the dispatcher said to him "Well you sound OK, are you sure we need to send anyone?" ............….Hello!!!!!!!!! This poor little fellow had just rolled his small car 3-4 times before it stopped on its side, finally falling back on all fours in the ditch. Looked like a total loss to me. Bless his heart, by this time he is crying a little, trying to be tough, so I gave him a big hug and told him it was going to be OK. Of all things he apologized to me for being upset and crying. Details: Junior in high school, lives down the road, his dad is a doctor, he calls dad, dad comes, checks him over…He’s OK other than a bad bruise/scrape from the seatbelt. So we talk a little and I finally tell him I’m going on home and get out of the way. Even though he lived near, I did not know him but it didn’t matter.
He thanked me for being there, talking to him, and giving him a big hug!
My heart melted.
Ooooooh the simply random acts of kindness
that makes your heart zing with joy.
Comfort…..and then comes the Joy.
PS….the big loud POP came from hitting the giant empty garbage can sitting beside the road……..today was our pick-up day! Thank God for seat belts and the smarts to wear them. Remember to buckle up; you may just save a life…..Yours!

PSS….The burgers were great along with the melted hoop cheese, toasted buns, grilled potatoes with citrus pepper and butter. Yum….
Here’s how to do the grilled potatoes:

2 small to medium sized baking potatoes, scrubbed well
Pam spray
Seasoning of choice….mine is citrus pepper and salt

Bake potatoes in the microwave, after poking a few holes in them with a knife, for 4 ½ minutes. Slice them in half length wise with a sharp knife. As you will see they are nearly done at this point. But don’t stop there since you already got the grill going! Spray each half with Pam, all over, bottom and tops. Sprinkle cut side with the seasonings and place face down on the grill. Grill for approximately 8 minutes, watching carefully for burning. Serve them up with butter!

PSSS…I’m still trying to figure out what the man on the motorcycle was doing to help?!? Maybe just his presence was enough….after all he was the first and only one to stop before I got there with my hugs.

Leaving you to soak this up for now….
In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.
"How much is an ice cream sundae?'"he asked.
"Fifty cents," replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.
"Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired.
By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.
"Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied.

The little boy again counted his coins.
"I'll have the plain ice cream," he said.
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty ice cream dish, were two nickels and five pennies..

You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

The Pursuit of Happiness

Happiness is what makes you smile….it’s like getting your peanut butter mixed with your chocolate! Finding a dollar on the sidewalk….anything that makes you giddy….

"An effort made for the happiness of others lifts us above ourselves."
~Lydia M. Child

Saying My ABC’s
Happiness is for “H”
Smiling Annie is Happy and she has no life!

Seems as though we are always in the pursuit of what can make us happy. Just what is the true meaning of happiness? This is the ultimate question with everyone’s different opinion. Does having wealth, tons of material things, everything your heart desires, winning the lottery, (Time Traveler trick!) make you happy….sure it does....a type of happy. But when does it end? Where do you go from there? How happy can a person be once he has everything he could possible have in the world? Or is happiness more than that? Sure it is. There are more happy people with very little than people with all things material. Now don’t get me wrong…it is nice to have enough of the things you need and to live without a constant struggle in life. “Happiness is not having what you want; it's wanting what you have.” Happiness can be found right in front of you. Open your eyes and see….look around you, feel the happiness in the greatest treasures of life….life itself. We are privileged to have experienced life in general. Make the most of what you have, where you are at, and know that you are exactly where you are meant to be in this world. …and choose to be happy!

My list of happy:
A warm snuggle
A tight hug
Knowing Jesus
A baby’s smile
A child’s giggle
Peace
A soft rain
Rollicking in the snow
Making someone’s day
Giving
Being the correct weight for my height…. (sorry, I’d be happy if this was true)
Sharing “Happiness is like a kiss...you must share it to enjoy it.”
Living life full
Contentment
Being Loved and loving others
Smiling
Lemonade
Thrifting
Happy is as happy does. Find your happy place and enjoy it….share it, bottle it up inside of you until you want to burst wide open and let it sing out! Put on a happy face and get happy! "Happiness comes in the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed." ~ Strom Jameson

Awakened To The Smell of Biscuits...

…sitting in the sun…
empty and alone, no family here.

The word gratitude comes to mind. Gratitude is being thankful and appreciating everything we have. Grateful for the sunshine, a peaceful home, a loving family, and the list can go on and on….

Saying My ABC’s
Gratitude is for “G”
"Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul."
~Henry Ward Beecher~

I am thankful that I was able to get up this morning, hearing the birds chirp outside my window and the smell of …............................my husband was in the kitchen cooking!
Yes, he was cooking homemade buttermilk biscuits to take for the guys he works with, they love his biscuits. Sometimes he takes my homemade strawberry jam and other times one of the other guys will bring some sausage. He always leaves me one or two of them, but too bad this morning I did not get any because I had to go for my 6 months fasting blood work…
Yep, it was time to go get poked. Fun, fun.
I’m also thankful for being able to:
drive myself to my appointment,
to breathe without an oxygen tank,
and to have a few dollars in my pocket.
Appreciation for the small things in life,
the overlooked and taken-for-granted things are so important.
Don’t ever forget where you came from, good or bad…
be grateful for the way you turned out in the end.
If you are not proud of yourself…do something about it!
And don’t forget to thank Jesus for all your many blessings. We don’t hesitate to pray for the things we need and want in our lives, but we must remember to thank Him too.
Gratitude is not being grateful without saying “Thank-You” to Him!

"When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive
- to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love...."

Faith Matters

faith
1. confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, an idea, or a thing.
2. belief which does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.
3. loyalty or allegiance to a person or thing; especially, holding to a promise.
4. the theological virtue defined as secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will.

Hebrews 11:6 describes the meaning and the practical role of faith: "Without faith it is impossible to please [God], for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." KJV
“…if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.” ~1 Corinthians 13:2 NIV

A preacher was caught in a horrific flood, and a man in a canoe offered to evacuate him. "No, I put my faith in the Lord to save me," he said. After being forced to the roof of his porch, another man in a speedboat offered assistance. "No, I put my faith in the Lord to save me," he again responded. Eventually forced to the highest point of his chimney, a Coast Guard helicopter attempted rescue but was turned away in the same manner. The preacher drowned and went before the Lord. "Why didn't you honor my faith and save me?” he asked. "What do you mean, I didn't?" the Lord replied. "I sent you two boats and a helicopter!!"
Moral of the story~"through faith we will know when God is speaking to us".

Paul writes in Ephesians 2:8-9 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works lest anyone should boast." NIV
Have a little faith, it can go a long way!

It's Worth The Effort...

"Happiness lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort." ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt
It takes great effort to achieve anything, without the effort of trying; it would not come to be so meaningful. Make an effort daily to encourage, to love, to nurture, to live… it takes very little effort to smile and the reward is usually infectious.

Dreams

Dreams

Dreams and visions of a more beautiful time.
Saying my ABC’s
Dreams are for the letter “D”
"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." ~Eleanor Roosevelt

The Graugnard House faces the mighty Mississippi River, however the view is now blocked by a giant levy to protect the house from rising flood waters. State Hwy 44 separates the house and the levy. Behind the house sits a modern day factory or refinery of some sort. In my review the scenery is not what used to be by any means. I can picture in my minds eye the mighty Mississippi rolling past with great fields of cotton and sugar cane growing all around this house and children running barefoot while playing and laughing. Giant live oaks may have once provided masses of shade and lots of beautiful flowers. Can’t you just see it?

Character

Fallen Character

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved." ~Helen Keller

Saying my ABC's....
Character is for "C"

This is one of many places Holly and I shot on our photo shoot down River Road, LA 44, Surely it was a beauty in it's own time, but somehow it has managed to be forgotten. The remains still show what great character it once held and protrayed. It is actually a very narrow house that is deep, so the shot from the front does not reveal it's true beauty. I believe it has experienced much trial and suffering but with no avail. See more here.
Happy Sunday to all!
